GIAT – Give It A Try N°1 – Lotus Traveler 8.5

Category GIAT traveler symbian e65

Some are writing SNTT (Show And Tell Thursday), i write GIAT (Give It A Try).

Because it's just proof of concept, just trying and issues, asking some help sometimes, i can't tell and show it thursday (and it's not thursday after all.... )

So, for my first GIAT, i will talk (write..) about Lotus Traveler.

At work, for now, we used Commontime's mSuite.
This piece of software just wok as expected and is suitable for Mobile smartphone with windows Mobile and symbian 3rd generation.(soon we will add iPhone too)
All that is needed with msuite is a data plan. Here in France, every operator sell 10Mo/month for 10 €.
This data plan is enough for msuite as everything is compressed and encrypted.

But for my little Nokia e65, i did not want to buy a data plan just to sync email, notes and calendar.
So i tried SyncML4J, funambol and at last, Traveler. (e65 come with wifi, so this is not an issue @home or @work)

What i want to do is to see if Traveler is able to sync data with just an unlimited wap plan (grps).
Wap plan is limited to web surfing only. I.E: http request only and only on port 80 (maybe 8080 and 443)!

So here is the limit of software like BlackBerry and commontime suite. They only work with data plan as they use some different ports and traffic mode.

I have to say immediatly that syncing my e65 with lotus domino 8.5 (traveler 8.5.0.1) and a simple wap plan is working flawlessly, but only manually via port 80. I've set the auto-sync feature to use the port 8080 and this is not working at all with this wap plan. (operator limitation, bug, server error, ?) But this is working via Wifi for exemple.

So here it is the full long day story to sync e65 with domino.
